Pastoral Care and the Membership & Care Committee

The Membership and Care Committee (MCC) was founded in 1994 at a time when an elders rotational stand-down system was introduced at Northgate. This limited the number of serving elders to eighteen.

The Aim

To ensure the continued pastoral care of all worshipping at Northgate.

The Method

Communion Cards - the introduction of a new form of Communion card, showing the dates of Communion services for each quarter.

Visits

To ensure that each member receives a visit at least four times a year, not necessarily pre-quarterly Communion.

Records

- to implement a system of recording visits to allow the Roll Clerk to signal to the Minister and MCC anyone not being visited over a six-month period.

Districts

To utilise the existing Elders' (broadly geographical) districts A to F

Visitors

- To supplement the visiting elders with volunteer non-serving elders and pastoral visitors. (We currently have 22 elders and 11 Pastoral Visitors)

Pastoral Visitors

- are non-elders, people selected to work alongside visiting elders in each district.

District Groups

An attempt was made to establish District groups and meetings and give cover for each district. n.b. only one group, D, has succeeded in forming and sustaining such a group, which meets quarterly and has typically 14 attenders.

Communications

- are by Minister contact, news of people, use of Northgate News. A network has been set up by the MCC i.e. the Asst. Secretary, Roll Clerk and Magazine editor are all members of the MCC.

Supplementary visits

- are arranged in the home, hospital, utilising all types of visitor but preferably from the district group.

Maintenence of the Roll

Deletions and additions are handled by the Roll Clerk. A congregational roll is issued to all members periodically by the Roll Clerk. A roll of adherents and contacts is also maintained.

New members

- initial contact is made by the MCC i.e. for transfers, confession of faith, and then handled by the Minister, Asst Church Secretary and Roll Clerk.

Communion in the Home/Hospital

- can be arranged by the MCC as required.

Transport arrangements

- to church and functions are arranged by the MCC as required.

Personal Event Recognition

are arranged by the MCC and followed up as required.

The Church Magazine

(Northgate News) is fully utilised by the MCC to communicate news of people, events, the availability of help etc.

Annual report

- to elders meeting by MCC

MCC meetings are held at approx. 6-week intervals, with written agendas and notes circulated to MCC members.
