This web site has been created as a companion to the Church Prospectus, which is available from the Church Secretary or as a PDF-format file.(more info on this), to provide prospective worshippers with some background into the history of the United Reformed Church in Darlington and of the particular building and body of people who form the churches at Northgate and Springfield. Information is also included to assist those new to the town in finding sources of useful services.
The United Reformed Church as a whole was formed in 1972 by the union of the Presbyterian and Congregational Churches. In Darlington, St George’s Presbyterian Church and Union St. Congregational Church united in 1975 as "Northgate URC" and decided to use the former St George’s buildings for worship and social purposes. More details of this are given in the “Brief History” later in the guide.
The Church Centre at Springfield, in the north of the town, is located in Thompson St. East, in what was for many years an area of declining industry and terraced housing. In recent years, however, the area has rejuvenated with new housing and the potential for church growth.
